Where is Punta Cana?
The Dominican Republic covers the Eastern two-thirds of the island known as Hispanola. Columbus discovered and named the island in 1492. Santo Domingo, the capital, is the oldest city in the New
World, and here too, are the oldest street, oldest cathedral, oldest house, oldest university, and first hospital in the Americas. The local economy is based on sugar, bananas, coffee, tobacco, cocoa and tourism. The Dominican
Republic is a great place for a vacation. The weather is good and the beaches stretch for miles. Punta Cana is on the eastern most tip of the island Hispanola If you follow the coast clockwise South and to the west you
will come to La Romana. About 90 minutes drive from Punta Cana.
What is the weather like in Punta Cana?
The weather in Punta Cana remains fairly stable year around. January is the coldest month with average low temperatures of 66 degrees and average high temperatures of 84 degrees.
July is the hottest month with average lows of 72 degrees and average highs of 88 degrees. Rain is not much of a problem. The driest month is March which only gets an average of 5 days with rain. The wettest month is June when
rain can be expected to fall an average of 12 days during the month. Typically rain is a tropical 20 minuet downpour that ends as quickly as it begins. This makes for near perfect vacation weather.
What should I take to Punta Cana?
The daytime uniform in Punta Cana is bathing suit and shorts. Take comfortable clothing for warm temperatures with short sleeves. A hat with a brim to protect your head and
shoulders from the sun. A high (30 or more) rated sunblock. A basic medical kit with pepto bismal, sunburn lotion, asparin are good to have along just in case. You can buy these things in Punta Cana but they
cost so much more if you buy them here. In the evening the resorts in Punta Cana and La Romana request people get a little dressier. Men will need long pants and a shirt with a collar and sleeves in the evening. (Dockers
and a golf shirt are fine). Sun dresses, slacks and tops are fine for the women.
Why is Punta Cana one of the hottest spots? Why are so many people booking vacation packages there?
Punta Cana, and La Romana have just been discovered by the American vacationeers. Twenty five years ago there
was nothing there. It has been developed for a relatively short time. Americans first began to go to Punta Cana about 5 years ago. It's new, different and you get a good value for you vacation dollar.
Beaches in Punta Cana tend to be very wide and palm tree lined with white sugar sand that never seems to get hot to walk on. The resorts are built 2 to 3 floor high with nothing taller than the tallest palm tree on the
property. Our vacation packages include a free nightly entertainment program at each resort. Some resorts have casinos others have discos.The natives are happy you are there and want you to return. The food is good, the
drinks flow, the sun is shinning, the beach is beautiful and your dollar goes a long way. An almost perfect combination.
What is shopping like?
Shopping is very limited in Punta Cana with few opportunities to buy local items. The Dominican Republic is noted for Amber and Larimar jewelry. Amber is the fossilized resin from a coniferous
tree which is now extinct. Larimar is a stone with soft blue hues that is only found in the Dominican Republic. More opportunities for shopping exist in the La Romana area.
How about Golf?
Golfers will find several courses in Punta Cana but will be happiest at the nearby area of La Romana where 3 Pete Dye courses are located. The Links, Teeth of the Dog, rated 19th in the world by Golf
Magazine and the new Dye Fore which is yet to be rated but expected to be rated even higher than the Teeth of the Dog.
